Martin Retro Strings

Martin Retro strings are made of an alloy known as Monel. Monel alloy is a combination of copper and nickel with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and other materials which were used for Acoustic Guitar Strings long before Bronze became popular in the 1970s. This gives the string a very long-lasting life due to the fact that it naturally repels oxidation. These strings sound mellow more quickly so you don't get that harsh toppy sound that phosphor bronze provides.

Martin Retro strings bring out the woody vintage tone of your acoustic guitar. They deliver rich mid and low tones for rhythm parts, as well as clear and clean notes for lead parts. The Monel alloy makes the string feel a little more responsive and therefore allows you to be much more expressive. The range of gauges makes these strings suitable for a range of genres.

    Retro Monel 11's

    These strings are really well suited to finger-picking parlour style guitars, I put a set of 11's on a WL-14 (ladder braced). They almost felt like flatwounds to me at first but they are made for this kind of guitar. The 11's have a nice tension in them and the high strings have good volume and sustain. Unsure how these strings would fare on an Orchestra Model or Dreadnought guitar but there's positive reviews for same on here.

    Top class service and quick delivery from strings.ie I tried these strings as I have a small bodied mahogany acoustic, and found that while phosphor bronze strings do sound good, they fade very quickly. These martin monels are bright and full but in a different way to regular bronze strings. They also seem to last a lot longer. Would recommend to anyone with a smaller bodied guitar who have the same issue with regular strings going dull quickly.

    These strings are bright and mellow at the same time. There is none of that abrasive zinginess that bronze has. I don't think I'll ever go back! And of course the service was perfect as usual.

    I ordered a couple of sets of Martin Retro strings for my 1974 Gibson J45 Delux. I have to say I am delighted with the way they sound and I will definitely be uusing them in future. I am equally delighted with the service from Strings.ie. I received my order the day after placing it, which I did not expect. There was also a personal note and a couple of plectrums in the package which was a nice touch.

    Better than SP Lifespans

    These strings sounded great straight out of the pack. Used the 12 gauges on my Martin J15 & Martin 00015m. Sounded less bright than the Martin SP's to my ear, a slightly metallic sound, but with a better tonal balance. The 12 gauges on my 00015m worked best, higher notes had a bell like clarity which I haven't found with any other string. Highly recommended.
